DATACENTER

Datacenters is big entity which is grouped multiple homogeneous as well as heterogeneous devices such that servers, storage and network devices. Based on number of servers or based on the service provided the data centers are categorized Tier-1, Tier-2, Tier-3 and Tier-4. The servers, storages and networks are grouped together to provide services to the customer.

The major consideration would be the power ( Alternate Current ) , how you are going to place the devices based on power usage the datacenter devices suppose to be distributed in order to balance the load. The possible inputs are single phase and three phases. If we haven’t design the load factor it can be result the imbalance to the electrical component.

Considering the redundant we have distribute the power through two different Power Distribution Units.

Primary Power Distribution chamber
Secondary Power Distribution chamber

The source of the power would be the local electricity and diesel generators and the UPS depends upon the cost of the electricity unit have to chose the datacenter location.

The next big thing is the Datacenter cooling part, we have to maintain the minimum 20 degree or base on the device specification. The requirement should be consider based on the number of device and how much heat is going generate each and every device.

Coming to the datacenter components, initially we are going to talk about server components. As, I told the servers could be belongs to homogeneous as well as heterogeneous. The server has been categorized as low, mid range and high end servers or enterprise servers. There is multiple type of plat forms are available to use. pSeries servers for AIX/Linux operating systems , xSeries servers for Windows/Linux operating systems , HP hardware for Hp-Unix operating system , Sun hardware for Solaris Operating system. There are lot many open source also available to use which is compatible with hardware.

I would say that Operating Systems are the backbone of the datacenter. We could talk about the physical & logical configuration of the servers. The physical server has been categorized based on the configuration, processor type, clock frequency speed. Based on the organization internal process the server has been procured from the hardware company. Beside this entire process there are multiple teams & process involved. Considering that we have setup the datacenter along with network in place, than we are going to place the server, now onwards we will talk about server.

Rack mounting procedure

The consideration for rack is that U size which is nothing but height, width and depth there are multiple versions of dimensions are available. The racks are used to mount servers. The height measurement of rack is in “U” size. The metric has been used in datacenter environment is “U” normally whoever works in datacenter they knew about this terminology. Normally servers can delivered in customer location as pre mounted racks and another one is that empty rack will be delivered. We have to chose racks to mount server, we will get two different types of the racks while placing the order itself; one is IBM racks another one is non IBM racks the choice of rack selection is based on person who ever placing order. Normally in every organization IRM (Infra Resource Management) team does this part, hence the finance factor is involved in this part.

Components of the Rack

Two number Power sockets
1. Exhaust fan
2. Rack doors.

Power Sockets

Power sockets are used to provide the input AC (Alternate Current) to the physical server, were as it has small circuit breaker and the maximum current capacity is 32 Amps. At any point in time we can drain 32 Amps from a single power strip. In case of any over current or short circuit the circuit breaker trips on initial point itself in-order to prevent the further damage. The racks have two power strips and the source will come from primary power distribution and secondary power distribution unit.

Exhaust fan

It used to drain the unwanted heat air from the rack, the older days rack does not has this facility. The modern racks have this feature.

Rack doors

There are two doors in the rack one is front another one is back, it has the lock attached on along. The most essential part is that we have to do the grounding with the help of electrician.

Datacenter cooling:-

Just imagine that we are getting service or access or processing something by using the power computers, how the power computers has been grouped together the computer room would be noisy its going to generate some amount of heat .As a datacenter design engineer we have thing to resolve those by implementing better cooling technologies. Already server room would be designed such a way where we cannot place the bulk machines to get the cool air even I can say that every square feet of datacenter is too costly. We have to do efficient cooling technology implementation to get proper cooling.

Considering that we have the small server room where we can implement that solution such a way that we can place comport cooling technology or building Heating, ventilating and air conditioner whereas the said technology provides that conditioned air.
